The Meaning Behind Sophie’s Rose

The name Sophie’s Rose honors the courageous faith of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose, a student-led, non-violent resistance group that opposed Nazi tyranny during World War II. Guided by their Christian convictions, Sophie, her brother Hans, and their friends believed they had a moral duty before God to stand against evil and defend the dignity of every human life.

Risking everything, they secretly distributed anti-Nazi leaflets at the University of Munich, exposing the regime’s atrocities and urging fellow Germans to resist. In 1943, Sophie and Hans were caught distributing leaflets, arrested, and swiftly sentenced to death. Yet even in the face of execution, Sophie remained steadfast, declaring,

“How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause?”

Their sacrifice exemplifies the biblical call to be salt and light in a dark world (Matthew 5:13-16).

At Sophie’s Rose, we seek to carry on this legacy of moral courage, standing for justice, human dignity, and compassion.
